Former Chief of General Staff İlker Başbuğ has memorialized the anniversary of the Çanakkale Independence War, condemning the government’s weak attitude towards the founder of Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Başbuğ stated: “I celebrate the 100th anniversary of the legend of Çanakkale, in every frame of which is Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. […] Not knowing this is pure ignorance. What would one say if he is ignored on purpose? Let the martyrs and veterans of Çanakkale rest in peace.”

He went on to say: “On 19 Feb, 1915, the English and French navies attacked the Dardanelles. Their soldiers climbed up to Seddülbahir afterwards. […] Colonel Mustafa Kemal foresaw this was coming and hit out [them].”
