Turkish Energy Minister Yıldız state that they did not wish the exchange rate of dollar to increase in terms of energy costs. However, Economy Minister Zeybekçi claimed that it would not affect the inflation.
The exchange rate of dollar increased to 2.74 TL last week, signaling for more increase before the elections. Euro also follows this fashion and increased to 2.93-2.96 TL.
President Tayyip Erdoğan referred to the issue as a temporary crisis. The AKP government continues to make various statements on the “crisis.” Energy Minister Taner Yıldız added his thoughts on the issue: “The increase of the exchange rate of dollar is not something that our ministry wishes for, since we buy with dollars and sell with Turkish liras. But, we believe that we can balance this situation by generating our own energy sources.”
On the other hand, Economy minister Nihau Zeybekçi also commented: “I told them not to interfere with the exchange rate. It is not fluctuating because of us. I do not think that it is something to worry about.”
He went on to say: “It will surely affect the April inflaiton, the positive changes in other Turkish sectors will neutralize it.”
The price of gas tripled and diesel fuel doubled within one week. In the past three months, the oil price was increased by 13%.
