Patriotic Party Youth Leader Arrested for Calling Erdogan a Dictator

Provincial Chairman of the youth wing of the Patriotic Party in Kayseri Aykutalp Avşar was sentenced to 1 years and a month prison sentence for calling Erdogan 'a dictator' during the Gezi Park protests in Kayseri in June 2013.

Erciyes University Civil Engineering Faculty 3rd grade student 22-year-old Aykutalp Avşar was sent to Kayseri Prison for the reason saying "Down with the AKP dictatorship, Erdogan will pay the price," in his statement during the Gezi Park demonstrations in Kayseri.

On the other hand, Turkish Youth Union (TGB) members Sinan Sungur and Berkay Sair who repeated the slogans chanted by Aykutalp Avşar were acquitted by the court. Avşar's lawyer İlhami Şimşek stated that he will demand for supervised release.

Lawyer Şimşek stated that Erciyes University students Sinan Sungur and Aykutalp Avşar are also being tried for calling Erdogan a "US servant". Şimşek said, "They are accusing these young boys for a slogan which doesn't even take place in the scene records. The witnesses of the trial are policemen and they are lying."

The Patriotic Party Youth Wing (Öncü Gençlik) and Turkish Youth Union launched a campaign via Twitter with the hashtag #AykutalpAvşaraÖzgürlük (Free Aykutalp Avşar).
