The members of Turkish Youth Union who put a sack over an American soldier in Istanbul were tried in court on the anniversary of Deniz Gezmiş and his friends who were all executed in 1972.
On 12 Nov, 2014, 13 members of the union put a sack over an American soldier, as a tribute to the incident that American soldiers put sacks over Turkish soldiers’ heads in Iraq during the invasion. They were surprisingly tried in the court on the death anniversary of the leftist university students Deniz Gezmiş, Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan who were executed in 1972.
A great number of people attended the hearing, from both the union and Patriotic Party. Prosecution demanded up to 10 years for the 13 members of the union.
After the hearing, protestors shouted slogans outside of the court. Secretary General of the union Çağdaş Yıldız commented on the issue: “Our protest is completely reasonable. We did not target the US soldiers in our protest. It was against the imperialism who shed a lot of blood in these lands. The Us imperialism was damaged with this protest of ours.”
