Turkey Backs Saudi-led Military Agression in Yemen

Turkey said it supports Saudi Arabia's military operations in Yemen against the Shiite Houthi group, which seized the capital Sana'a and several other provinces

"We support the military operation launched by a coalition force consisting of the countries in the region, led by the countries of Gulf Cooperation Council against the Houthi movement upon the request of the legitimately elected President Hadi, about which Saudi Arabia informed Turkey in advance," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia launched a military operation early Thursday in Yemen. The Saudi ambassador in Washington D.C., Adel bin Ahmed al-Jubeir, said that the operation was part of a 10-country effort.

In a joint statement, five Gulf countries – Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait – said the operation "was in response to a request from Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi to protect Yemen from the aggression of Houthi militias."

The Houthis, for their part, issued what they described as a constitutional declaration dissolving parliament and establishing a 551-member transitional council.

The declaration, however, was rejected by most of Yemen's political forces – along with some neighboring Gulf countries – which described it as a coup against constitutional legitimacy.

Turkey reiterates travel warning to Yemen

The Turkish Foreign Ministry warned its citizens on Wednesday not to travel to Yemen where the security situation has deteriorated and remains unpredictable.

An announcement on the Turkish Foreign Ministry website recommended Turkish citizens leave Yemen as soon as possible.

"As of today, Aden airport is closed as well," the announcement said.

"A pro-Saleh military battalion has controlled the airport after sporadic clashes with troops and vigilantes loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi," a source, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.

Several Arab states, all of them allies of the US, have joined a Saudi-led military offensive against Yemen’s Houthi group with at least 185 fighter jets on late Wednesday.
